ChemInform Abstract
It is found that for the system studied the species H+, HCrO-4, and Fe(III)Cr(VI)O+4 ions have a controlling role for the appearance and maintenance of oscillations. The most important species is Fe(II)Cr(VI)O4 which is temporarily insoluble on the electrode surface and responsible for oscillating instead of oxide films as passivating compounds. The mechanism is well corroborated by results from a mathematical model which also reflects the necessity of the FeCrO4 film for the development of periodic behavior.
