ChemInform Abstract

The title compounds are prepared by reaction of the elements at 750 °C followed by annealing at 800 °C. The compounds crystallize in the GaMo4S8-type structure (space group Fequation image3m, Z = 4). The structure is built up by cubane-like V4Q8 units and GeQ4 tetrahedra arranged in the NaCl manner. Electron density and electron localization function maps reveal that the previous description of these materials as spinels is not appropriate. GeV4S8 is an antiferromagnetic semiconductor (TN = 13 K) showing an anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility at 196 K.
