2-Substituted iodonium salts (III) and (X) of the four title compounds are easily prepared by acidic coupling of a prior oxidized iodoarene with the appropriate arene. Treatment of xanthene, which is the most activated arene of the title compounds, with an excess of iodoarene ( IV) or the use of diiodoarenes (VI) and (XI) as starting materials provides diiodonium salts (V), (VIII), and (XII).
