ChemInform Abstract

Orange-yellow crystals of Na8Pb2(Ge2S6)2 (I), ruby-red ones of Na8Sn2( Ge2S6)2 (II) and red-orange crystals of Na8Pb2(Si2Se6)2 (III) are prepared through basic non-oxidizing flux reactions and characterized by SEM-EDS, single-crystal XRD, and physical measurements. The isostructural compounds (monoclinic, C2/m, Z = 1) are built-up from ( GeS6)6- or (Si2Se6)6- ethane-like fragments surrounded by metal cationic sites which are occupied either by Na or mixtures of Na and Pb or Sn. Due to the ordering of Pb or Sn on the cationic sites, (I) and (III) exhibit a two-dimensional “layered” or “chunky” morphology, resp., and (II) a three-dimensional “chunky” morphology. The new compounds are semiconductors.
