ChemInform Abstract

The structure of Cd3Cu4 first reported by Samson in 1966 is a large unit cell approximant of icosahedral i-CdCu consisting of two interpenetrating diamond-like networks. One consists of fused Friauf polyhedra leaving large cavities and the other consists of icosahedra stuffing the cavities of the first network. The icosahedral substructure is shown to be based on the principles of the recently introduced I3-cluster concept and the complete structure of Cd3Cu4 is based on an I3- and a Frank-Kasper net structure connected through a three dimensional net of Cu hexagons. The structure of quasicrystalline i-CdCu can be best described as τ3 scaled substructure of B-type connected and isolated I13-clusters.
