Base-mediated reaction of readily accessible 2- nitrotetraphenylporphyrins with active methylene compounds gives access to novel functionalized tetraphenylchlorins (cf. (III), (VI)) by way of a sequential Michael addition and rare nucleophilic displacement of the secondary nitro group.
