ChemInform Abstract

Kinetic measurements in the temp. range 35-400 °C combined with literature data show that the moisture dependence of the corrosion rate of unalloyed Pu in air or oxygen-containing atmospheres is confined to the 25 to 200 °C range with a rate maximum near 110 °C. The corrosion rate is independent of the oxygen pressure. The chemistry of moisture-enhanced corrosion is elucidated and the acceleration of Pu corrosion by moist Ar is discussed.
