The key-steps in the synthesis of the two title compounds (IX) and (XI) is the coupling of the hexose-derived silylacetylene (II) with pentose derivatives and the cationic cyclization and reductive decomplexation of the intermediate acetylene biscobalthexacarbonyl complex (cf. (VIII)).
