The asym. total synthesis of the antitumor title compound (V) is accomplished by regioselective ring opening of the chiral tosylaziridine (I) with a higher-order cuprate derived from the benzodioxole (II). An alternative key step involves the ring-opening of the novel carbomethoxyaziridine (VI).
