ChemInform Abstract

Singlet oxygen oxygenation of 5-aryl-2-methoxyfurans (I), recently carried out in a one-pot procedure followed by base treatment of the resulting crude dihydrofurans (II) (≅100% yield) affords a stereoselective synthesis of the oxiranes (III). The reaction occurs efficiently only when the C-4 substituent of (II) is an electron- withdrawing group.
