ChemInform Abstract

An efficient catalytic process for the conversion of five- and six- membered ring lactones to lactols is developed. It represents an alternative to the reduction with AlH(iBu)2. The transformation proceeds at room-temp. and atmospheric pressure and uses air-stable inexpensive polymethylhydrosiloxane as a hydride source.
