ChemInform Abstract

Terbia-doped yttria (10 and 8 mol%)-stabilized zirconia (Y10ZTb and Y8ZTb) solid solutions containing up to 50 mol% (m/o) TbO1.75 are prepared by dissolving TbO1.75 into yttria (10 and 8 m/o)-stabilized zirconia. The compounds retain the single phase cubic fluorite structure. Measurements of the total electrical conductivity in the temp. range 300-800 °C in 1 atm O2, air and 10-5 atm P(O2) using impedance spectroscopy and of the p-type conductivity using EMF cells and oxygen-ion blocking electrodes show that the mixed conductors Y8ZTb and Y10ZTb exhibit significant p-type conductivity at TbO1.75 concentrations ≥ 20 m/o. The p-type conductivity increases with the terbia concentration and the P(O2) (10-5 to 1 atm). The oxygen-ion conductivity predominates at 20 m/o TbO1.75 content in air at > 650 °C.
