Tetraphenylphosphonium hydrogendifluoride, known as a surprisingly powerful source of fluoride ion, is an effective and convenient catalyst for the aldol reaction of silyl enol ethers (I) or (IV) with aldehydes (II) or the Grignard-type addition reaction of the silylacetylene (VI) to carbonyl compounds (VII).
