ChemInform Abstract

Mesoporous aluminosilicate MCM-41 molecular sieves containing exclusively 6-coordinate nonframework Al are obtained by using Catapal alumina or Na aluminate as Al sources. By use of Al sulfate, aluminosilicate MCM-41 samples containing only 4-coordinate framework Al and a framework Si/Al ratio as low as 10 is obtained as shown by 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR. TEM of a sample exhibiting an Si/Al ratio of 60 reveals a somewhat irregular hexagonal pore arrangement. Thus, the location and coordination of Al in aluminosilicates MCM-41 is controlled by the nature of the source of Al.
