The phosphonylbutadienes (V) and (VI) which are difficult to prepare by any other methods are synthesized in two steps by reaction of the lithiated phosphonates (I) with various aromatic or aliphatic aldehydes (II) followed by a stereospecific conversion of the resulting alcohol (III) into the dienes (V) and (VI).
