The thioxanthene-oxide (I) is converted into the alkylated thioxanthene (III) on treatment with the grignard compounds (II). The reduced derivatives (IV) are formed as by-products. The observation, that the side-products (V) and (VI) are generated, leads to the proposition of a mechanism.
