ChemInform Abstract

Reaction of Ln2O3 with BaO and B2O3 in PbO-melts provides the title compounds LnBa3(BO3)3. Borates with Ln: Ho, Tm, Yb, Lu crystallize in the hexagonal system (space group P63cm, Z = 6) and DyBa3(BO3)3 in the trigonal system (space group R3, Z = 6). In the hexagonal crystals, the Ba- and O-atoms together form the close-packed structure with the Ln-atoms in octahedral cavities. The rhombohedral DyBa3(BO3)3 crystals are found to be isostructural with ScSr3(BO3)3.
