ChemInform Abstract

The new title compound, prepared by heating a stoichiometric mixture of CaCO3, BaCO3 and Pd powder in the presence of a 10-fold excess of BaCl2 at 1050 °C, crystallizes in the orthorhombic system (Fmmm) . The structure, which is isotypic with that of NaBa2Cu3O6, consists of edge-sharing square planar PdO4 polygones forming isolated Pd6O12 rings which are linked in the plane by trigonal CaO6 prisms. The 2 . infin.(CaPd3O6) layers formed along (010) contain hexagonal prismatic and almost cubic cavities. They are stacked with a shift of a/2 forming a 3-dimensional network with Ba2+ ions between the layers.
