The dioxopyrrolecarboxylate (I) reacts with 2-aminophenol (II) to give the hydroxyoxopyrrolecarboxylate (III) mentioned in the title which undergoes cleavage/recyclization upon attempts to recrystallize, producing the benzoxazinone (IV). Treatment of (IV) with excess (II) forms the benzoxazinone (V) and the oxamide (VI).
