Treatment of the 2-acylaminonicotinonitriles (I) with hydrogen chloride yields the pyridopyrimidinones (II). The methyl group of (IIa) and (IIb) reacts with acetic anhydride (III), the benzoyl chlorides ( V), phenyl isocyanate (VII), or benzaldehyde (IX) to give the derivatives (IVa), (IVb), (VI), (VIII), and (X).
