Reaction of the hydroxyindan derivative (I) with p-nitrobenzoic acid yields the ester (III) which is subjected to ester cleavage, silylation, and selenoxide elimination to give the title compound (VII). Irradiation of (VII) in glacial acetic acid or aqueous acetic acid forms a number of products.
