ChemInform Abstract

The novel title compounds are prepared by reaction of K2S5 with Zr and In powders or Cr and Sn powders, resp., and S8 at 1273 K (6 d). The structure of (I) belongs to the hexagonal system (P63/mmc, Z = 2), whereas both hexagonal and trigonal phases are present in as-prepared ( II) (R3m, Z = 3). As revealed from single-crystal data, the hexagonal and trigonal phases have closely related layered structures similar to that of CdI2 with double close-packed layers of S atoms. The transition metals are disordered and occupy all the octahedral sites inside the layers, while the K ions are located in trigonal-prismatic sites between these layers. (I) has an ionic conductivity of 0.5 (M. omega. cm)-1 at 25 °C, whereas the conductivity of bulk (II) is below the instrumental limit.
