ChemInform Abstract
The dissolution kinetics of an Nd15Fe77B8 permanent magnet in magnetized and demagnetized states are investigated as a function of the cathodic potential, the pH value of the sulfate test solution, and of the stirring rate. It is shown that the abnormal dissolution rate of the intermetallic increases markedly with increasing cathodic polarization, an effect which is caused by hydrogenation and mechanical degradation of the magnet surface. A magnetic field radically inhibits the process of abnormal dissolution of the alloy tested, consequently the permanent magnet in magnetized state corrodes with much lower dissolution rates. However, the surface of the magnetized alloy degrades with the same high rate during cathodic exposure, independently of the magnetization state.
