ChemInform Abstract

Studies under vacuum using a constant-volume apparatus and a microbalance, and under dynamic atmosphere of air, N2, and O2 using TG and DSC, show the decomposition of anhydrous copper oxalate to proceed to Cu metal under inert conditions, whereas in air and O2 CuO is the decomposition product. The decomposition is exothermic with an enthalpy change of -9 kJ/mol in N2 and -134 kJ/mol in air. In each case an Avrami-Erofeev relationship with n = 3 holds for the experiments. No evidence for the existence of Cu2C2O4 is found which has previously been speculated to be an intermediate in the decomposition.
