Magnesia tripolyphosphate cement (MTC) pastes are prepared by addition of MgO powder to a saturated aqueous solution of (NH4)3H2P3O10 (1 min stirring, pressing into a mold). In contrast to the magnesia orthophosphate cement paste, which reaches maximum compressive strength (22.6 MPa) after 18 h, the MTC paste requires about 8 days to reach the maximum compressive strength (91.0 MPa). 31P MAS NMR results obtained for MTC samples prepared under different conditions show that the hardened MTC retains the tripolyphosphate precursor structure under ambient-temp. processing conditions.
