ChemInform Abstract

Fumaric acid (I) is converted to the diesters (III) which are subjected to dihydroxylation, yielding the tartrates (IV). Their oxidative degradation with H5IO6 results in formation of the glyoxalates (V) and the corresponding hydrates (VI). Both give the hydrazones (VIII) by treatment with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (VII). The mixture (Vb)/(VIb) is completely transformed into (VIb) upon standing in an aqueous solution. Heating with pyridinium tosylate gives pure (Vb).
