The mercaptobenzothiazole (I) reacts with the dialkyl phosphorochloridate (IIb) or the phosphorochloridothioates (IIa) and ( IIc) to produce a mixtures of the S-alkyl (III) and N-alkyl derivatives (IV) instead of the expected phosphorylated compounds. Similarly, the mercaptotriazoles (V) are S- and N-methylated with (IIa) , yielding the sulfide (VI) and the thione (VII). 2-Mercaptoimidazole ( VIII), however, only forms the methylthio compound (IX) upon treatment with (IIa).
