Abstract

Diketene (I) is coupled with triethylammonium amidosulfonate (II) to produce the acetoacetamide-N-sulfonic acid (III) which is cyclized upon treatment with SO3 and subsequently converted into the artificial sweetener (V) by treatment with KOH (IV).

ChemInform Abstract

Diketene (I) is coupled with triethylammonium amidosulfonate (II) to produce the acetoacetamide-N-sulfonic acid (III) which is cyclized upon treatment with SO3 and subsequently converted into the artificial sweetener (V) by treatment with KOH (IV). Another route to (V) starts with the acetoacetamide (VI) which is coupled with the SO3 pyridine adduct (VII), cyclized, and then converted into the potassium salt (V).
