Abstract

Upon irradiation triphenylacetonitrile (I) undergoes the novel α,α-elimination previously reported for some analogous compounds to give (III) and (IV).

ChemInform Abstract

Upon irradiation triphenylacetonitrile (I) undergoes the novel α,α-elimination previously reported for some analogous compounds to give (III) and (IV). When a methoxy group is introduced into the phenyl ring, however, another photochemical process which gives the corresponding triarylmethane (VI) and the methoxytriarylmethane (VII) takes place.
