ChemInform Abstract

The salts A3(Ru2Br9) with A: Rb, Cs, or 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (emim) are synthesized by a modified literature procedure; usually in low yields typically ranging from 7 to 35%. Cyclic voltammograms for a solution of (Ru2Br9)3- in the basic room-temp. ionic liquid AlBr3-(emim)Br indicate the generation of the mixed-valence complex (Ru2Br9)4-. XRD data show the (Ru2Br9)3- anion to be an almost idealized confacial bioctahedron with significant metal-metal interaction. Several approaches to prepare the salts A4(Ru2OBr10) (A: Rb or Cs), using literature and alternative routes, fail. The products obtained are shown to be mixtures of A3(Ru2Br9) and ABr.
