ChemInform Abstract

The nitrophenyldihydropyridines (IV) are irradiated, forming the nitrosophenylpyridines (V) which are transformed into the dimers (VI) in the solid state. These are cyclized, yielding the chloro-6-hydroxybenzonaphthyridines (VII) which are also obtained directly from (IV). Oxidation of the dihydropyridines (IV) gives the pyridines (VIII) which undergo reductive cyclization, yielding the 6-hydroxybenzonaphthyridines (IX). The 6-hydroxybenzonaphthyridines (VII) and (IX) are deoxygenated, forming the benzonaphthyridines (X) and (XI).
