Abstract
The title compound (II) is prepared from the acetoxy derivative (I) according to a known procedure.

The title compound (II) is prepared from the acetoxy derivative (I) according to a known procedure. Oxidation of (II) proceeds via epoxidation of the carbon, carbon double bond and cleavage of the cyclobutane moiety to yield the keto aldehyde (III) instead of the expected bicyclo(3.2.0)diol. A mechanism is discussed.
