Abstract

Treatment of dimethyl sulfite (I) with paraformaldehyde (II) and gaseous dimethylamine (III) yields trimethylammoniomethanesulfonate (IV) whereas condensation reaction of (I) with (II) and (III) in aqueous solution gives dimethylammoniomethanesulfonate (V).
