ChemInform Abstract

The compound Mo2Cl8O, obtained as a minor product of the interaction of SOCl2 with molybdic acid, crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2/c, Z=2. Its structure can best be described in terms of the ions (Mo2Cl9)+ and (Mo2Cl7O2)-. The binuclear cation is singly chlorine-bridged and the Mo atoms have a distorted square-pyramidal coordination. The structure of the anion is very different with distorted octahedral coordination for the Mo atoms which are triply chlorine bridged. Cations and anions are linked through the oxygen atoms to give infinite chains.
