Abstract

The reaction between the N-nitrosohydrazines (I) and ethyl acetoacetate (II) is studied for the first time.

The reaction between the N-nitrosohydrazines (I) and ethyl acetoacetate (II) is studied for the first time. This reaction yields the pyrazolones (III), which are probably formed via the corresponding hydrazones derived from the hydrazines (I). These intermediary hydrazones undergo 1,4-migration of the nitroso group followed by intramolecular cyclocondensation to give the pyrazolones (III). Their structures are confirmed, inter alia, by the preparation and characterization of derivatives.
