Abstract

Hydroformylation of paraformaldehyde (I) or 37% aqueous formaldehyde with syngas (II) in the presence of Rh4(CO)12 and bulky onium halides yields glycolaldehyde (III), together with methanol (IV) and methyl formate (V).

ChemInform Abstract

Hydroformylation of paraformaldehyde (I) or 37% aqueous formaldehyde with syngas (II) in the presence of Rh4(CO)12 and bulky onium halides yields glycolaldehyde (III), together with methanol (IV) and methyl formate (V). High-boiling by-products are not observed. The reaction is optimized, and mechanistic aspects are discussed in detail.
