ChemInform Abstract

Single crystals of Cd(AlCl4)2 (I) are obtained from a CdCl2/AlCl3 (1:2 molar ratio) melt upon slow cooling (from 250 °C → 20 °C, 5 d). Reduction of (I) with excess Cd at 350 °C results in the formation of Cd2(AlCl4)2 (II). (I) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P1a1, Z=2, and is isotypic with Cd(GaCl4)2 and Cd(AlBr4)2. (II) is triclinic, space group C1, Z=2.
