ChemInform Abstract

It is demonstrated that detailed informations on the atomic arrangement of colloidal metal particles can be obtained by high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) combined with appropriate techniques to prepare ultrafine powders. HREM-imaging of a Ag particle of 35 Å diameter shows that discrete Ag atoms are located around a decahedral center. The Au colloids contain either deca- and icosahedral, multiply twinned particles of 100-400 Å size, or triangular particles of 200 Å up to more than 1000 Å.
