Abstract

The key step in the total synthesis of morphine (VI) is the coupling of the phenol (I) with the alcohol (II) under Mitsunobu's conditions.

The key step in the total synthesis of morphine (VI) is the coupling of the phenol (I) with the alcohol (II) under Mitsunobu's conditions. The resulting ether (III) is transformed into the epimeric compound (IV) which is cyclized with butyllithium to yield (V). Further conversions finally lead to morphine (VI).
