Abstract

Malic acid (Ia) and tartaric acid (Ib) are converted to the anhydrides (III) by reaction with the trihaloacetic anhydrides (II).

ChemInform Abstract

Malic acid (Ia) and tartaric acid (Ib) are converted to the anhydrides (III) by reaction with the trihaloacetic anhydrides (II). Ring opening of (III) with 1-octanol or 1-octylamine (IV) yields the monoesters or monoamides (V) under simultaneous cleavage of the trihaloacetyl ester bond.
