ChemInform Abstract
The pure compounds M(HSO4)2 (M: Ba, Sr, Mg) are prepared using known procedures and shown to be real hydrogensulfates by X-ray analysis. Sr(HSO4)2 and Ba(HSO4)2 crystallize in the orthorhombic system (Pbca, Z = 8 and P212121, Z=4, respectively). Sr(HSO4)2 is isotypic to Ca(HSO4)2. Attempts to synthesize Be(HSO4)2 fail. Mg(HSO4)2, in contact with moist air, forms the monohydrate, which can be dehydrated at 120 °C reforming Mg(HSO4)2. The relationship between the crystal structures and the chemical properties of the alkaline earth metal hydrogensulfates are discussed.
