Abstract
While the ketone (II) can be transformed to the lactone (I) using method A) or B) and oxidized to the lactone (III) (yield given in mg), the isomeric ketone (VIII) remains unchanged under these conditions.

While the ketone (II) can be transformed to the lactone (I) using method A) or B) and oxidized to the lactone (III) (yield given in mg), the isomeric ketone (VIII) remains unchanged under these conditions. The oximes (VI) or (IX) react via method D) to give (I) or the lactam (X). The ketone (XIa) or its oxime (XIb), when subjected to methods A)-D), yields the products shown in the scheme. The mixture of (XII) and (XIII) can only be identified by PMR.
