The yellow title compounds (II) and (III) or (VII) (yield given in g) and (VIII) (no yield given) can be prepared as shown in the scheme. When irradiated at 60- 120°C in benzene or chlorobenzene, (VII) furnishes an almost quantitative yield of 1,1,2,2-tetra-tert-butylethane, a compound whose synthesis is pursued by the authors. Thermal decompositions of the title compounds are investigated and the observed structure-reactivity relationships are discussed.
