ChemInform Abstract

In contrast to carboxyamidyls (IIa) and (IIb), which cyclize togive (III) and (IV), the analogous cyclization of (IIc) fails to occur. Photolysis of (VII) reveals only the sultam (VIII) in addition to the parent sulphonamide. It is concluded from these results as well as from ESR and MNDO calculations that mixing of the II-ground and Z-excited states of amidyls (IIa) and (IIb) is facilitated by their acyclic nature and a small energy difference between the two states involved.
