The title compounds form during slow isothermal evaporation of a solution of either RbCl or CsCl and ReCl3 (1:1 molar ratio) in conc. hydrochloric acid. The Crystal structures of both RbReCl4 (Cmcm, Z=12) and CsReCl4 (C2cm, Z=12) contain [Re3Cl12]3- Cluster units. The differences in the Crystal structures result from the different coordination numbers and different polyhedra of Rb+ and Cs+.
