Shakespeare's Playhouses
Summary
Until 1594 the professional playing groups could never eXpect to perform in one place for any length of time. They had only recently acquired the use of the large amphitheatres that were custom-built for their use in London. Mostly they toured, performing at inn yards or in the upper rooms of inns even inside London. Settling to perform in one space was not their practice. Even the Queen's Men, during the years when they were England's leading company, from 1583 to the early 1590s, played at four different inns inside the city as well as at all three of the open playhouses located in the suburbs: the Theatre, the Curtain and the Rose.
