Synthesis of 3-methyl-, 4-methyl- and 3,4-dimethylcyclopenta[cd]pyrenes
Abstract
A convenient synthesis of three cyclopenta[ad]pyrene derivatives methylated on the five-membered ring is described. The starting materials were easily available ketones which were either Wolff-Kishner-reduced or treated with methyllithium followed by dehydration with p-toluene-sulfonic acid to give the partially saturated derivatives. Careful aromatization with DDQ gave the novel methylated compounds in reasonable yields.
