Abstract

New modes of particle oscillations, associated with magnetic properties, can exist in a one-dimensional chain of charged magnetized particles in a plasma. The rotational modes appear as an interplay of electrostatic and magnetostatic interactions of the particles with the plasma and with themselves. The stability of equilibria, transitions between the different equilibria, and a critical dependence on the external fields and plasma parameters are investigated. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
