Graphical Abstract

Three different cyclodextrins promote the emulsion copolymerization of a highly waterinsoluble monomer, heptadecafluorodecyl methacrylate, through reversible formation of inclusion complexes. Depending on the solubility of the inclusion complex, heterocoagulation of the fluorinated copolymer with pre-formed latex particles leads to the formation of distinctive core-shell “patchy” nanostructures, which self-assemble into highly hydrophobic latex films.
