Abstract

A new omnidirectional monopole antenna well suited to application in a wireless universal serial bus dongle for wideband operation is presented. The antenna is an L-shaped metal-plate monopole antenna consisting of a rectangular monopole element and a matching portion. The antenna is suitable to be mounted at the top region of a host dongle as a concealed antenna and can provide a very wide operating bandwidth of larger than 6.8 GHz (∼3.4–10.2 GHz). In addition, omnidirectional radiation is obtained for frequencies across the operating bandwidth. Effects of the system ground-plane length on the antenna's impedance and radiation characteristics are also analyzed. Details of the proposed antenna are described, and a prototype of the design example is constructed and studied. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
